Mirror, Mirror, Mirror
When blogged about my journey from China to America, I stole the title from a famous Chinese novel: Journey to the West. The main character, Tang Monk (唐僧), spent his whole life building the foundation of Buddhism in China. One reason for his wild success was luck, I think, because he lived during the reign […]

Why I blog
Just a quick post today explaining the why. After the staycation in the holidays, work and school are back to “normal”. I won’t have as much time to write new posts. But I’ll. My biggest inspiration to blog was from Yuan Sophie Liu. One of her many achievements is she was an avid blogger, for […]

Journey to the west
Happy New Year! Time like this makes us hope for the future, but also make us reminiscent of the past. On the first day of 2022, I’d like to look back on my first journey from the East to the West. 西游记 (xī yóu jì) is ranked among the top four Chinese novels. It’s translated […]

Sing hallelujah
Sing 2 is an uplifting movie we watched during this holiday season. Not to spoil the new movie, I’ll share what the song Hallelujah in Sing (1) means to me. The popular song has different versions of lyrics. The lyrics of the version in the Sing movie can be found here. Please watch those if […]

Change of course
New year brings new hope. New hope brings new ideas. Ideas and actions bring changes. There is a Chinese proverb describing fundamental change over time: 三十年河东 (sān shí nián hé dōng) 三十年河西 (sān shí nián hé xī). The Yellow River is a famous river in China. It changed courses frequently in history. The same village […]

Chopstick power
2022 is around the corner. Eating healthy is a great new year resolution. If you are feeling adventurous, ditch the forks and knives, use chopsticks at dinner table instead. If you already do, then challenge your friends who haven’t to try. They will thank you. Chopsticks 筷子 (kuàn zi) were invented before the wheels. Chopsticks […]

We’ll see
The Covid-19 virus was discovered in 2019. After 2+ years in the pandemic, the word unprecedented has lost its punch. Instead of using numbers like 21, now we use Greek alphabets for new variants. The variants are dead serious, so their names should be. However, every dark cloud has a silver lining. Thanks to decades […]

Shepherds quake
The first post discussed the translation of the song title from Silent Night to 平安夜 (píng ān yè) in Chinese. For the rest of the song translation, what still puzzles me is the translation of “quake” in “Shepherds quake at the sight”. Maybe you can chime in as well. Here is the sentence-by-sentence translation of […]
